In July 2024 the Center for Applied Special Technology (CAST) published the Universal Design for Learning (UDL Guidelines 3.0. The guidelines off a set of concrete suggestions that can be applied to any discipline or domain to ensure that all learners can access and participate in meaningful, challenging learning opportunities. Join us for an interactive, engaging learning experience as we discuss the new guidelines from the perspective of a UDL/Inclusive Instruction Specialist and Assistive Technology Specialist. Learn how these new guidelines impact students with disabilities and pave the way for accessibility of use of AT in schools.
Learning Outcomes
- Define Universal Design for Learning as it relates to optimizing access to Accessible Educational Materials and Assistive Technology.
- Learn how to support learners with disabilities utilizing the UDL Guidelines 3.0.
- Discuss how AT and accessible technology can remove barriers and support learners
Join us for an interactive showcase where Accessible Educational Materials (AEM), assistive technology (AT), and accessible technology harmonize to support students. Discover the unique characteristics and collaborative power of AEM, AT, and accessible technology, explore real-life examples, and gain tips and resources for implementation. Engage in lively discussions, reflect on your practices, and share experiences with peers. By the end of this session, you’ll have a deeper understanding of how these elements create inclusive learning environments, ensuring every student can participate in their own learning!
Learning Outcomes
- Participants will identify what AEM, AT, and accessible technology are
- Participants will observe 2 different examples of how AEM, AT, and accessible technology work together.
- Participants will discuss one or more ways AEM, AT, and accessible technology are being utilized in their current environment.
This session describes the development of a secondary transition program’s initiative to both build on assistive technology consideration and implementation across a district and improve student vocational outcomes by merging their Assistive Technology Resource Center (ATRC) with on-site student volunteer work experiences. This presentation is geared towards those looking for creative problem-solving strategies to meet multiple needs when working with individuals with disabilities. The content focuses on one district’s needs/challenges that led to the program’s development, in addition to detailed information on the program design and activities.
Learning Outcomes
- Recognize the needs assessment results that led to this initiative
- Identify the specific work experience design and activities promoting district-wide AT consideration while developing student work skills, self-determination, and self-advocacy skills.
- Analyze this initiative and design for broader application in other environments
- This presentation proposal’s content also supports the Innovative Practices in Disability Disciplines track.
In today’s diverse educational landscape, technology plays a pivotal role in ensuring that every student has access to an equitable and inclusive learning experience. This presentation, “Empowering All Learners: Leveraging Technology for Inclusive Education,” explores how educators can harness the power of technology to meet the needs of all students, including those with disabilities, language barriers, and diverse learning styles. Attendees will learn about innovative tools and strategies that promote engagement, accessibility, and personalized learning. Through case studies and practical examples, we will demonstrate how technology can be a powerful enabler, breaking down barriers and fostering an environment where all students can thrive.
Learning Outcomes
- Understanding Inclusive Education Strategies: Participants will identify key principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and explore research-backed assistive technologies to create accessible and inclusive learning environments for all students, including those with disabilities.
- Applying Technology to Enhance Learning: Participants will demonstrate the ability to integrate adaptive software, assistive devices, and multimodal teaching strategies into their instructional practices, addressing diverse learning styles and fostering student engagement.
