We will begin by highlighting the importance of adaptation and the role of adapted physical education (APE). We will begin by discussing the use of a student centered approach, review the development of individualized education programs and strategies for assessing goals. We will discuss examples of inclusive games and discuss their benefits. We will explore the use of AT and strategies and demo the process in creating an adapted device. We will describe how these adaptations and strategies are used in an after school adapted wheelchair basketball program. Attendees will have an opportunity to participate in an adapted game activity simulating an APE session. By the end, participants should have a greater awareness of the importance of APE in promoting independence and encouraging physical activity.

Hybrid Assistive Technology (AT) service models provide a flexible and client-centered approach for Vocational Rehabilitation clients. By integrating in-person and remote support, these models enhance accessibility, efficiency, and client engagement. A key component of success is incorporating 1-3 instructors to create a structured support system, ensuring clients receive diverse expertise and ongoing encouragement. This session will explore the benefits of hybrid AT services, the impact of multiple instructors on client success, and strategies for overcoming common implementation challenges. Attendees will gain insights into evidence-based approaches that improve employment outcomes, foster independence, and increase service efficiency for VR clients.
Learning Outcomes
- Understand the benefits of hybrid AT service models for VR clients, including accessibility and efficiency improvements.
- Learn how incorporating 1-3 instructors enhances client engagement, skill retention, and support systems.
- Identify strategies to address common challenges in implementing hybrid AT services, such as funding, technology barriers, and client readiness.

Arizona Vocational Rehabilitation (AZ VR) has many services relating to Assistive Technology. Vehicle Modifications is only one of the many services AZ VR can provide for our qualifying clients. Transportation is one of the largest barriers to people with disabilities. Today’s employment market is usually a shared in-person and/or virtual environment. Currently in Arizona, there are trains, buses, taxis, Dial-a Ride and other private or non-profit funded services. Unfortunately, there is either a lack of those services or those services do not meet the needs of the client. I have discovered especially in remote areas transportation services are either non-existent or too expensive. Join me in exploring your driving options.
Learning Outcomes
- Considerations of Adaptive Driving in AZ Vocational Rehabilitation
- Gain an understanding of the AZ Vocational Rehabilitation process in obtaining a Vehicle Modification
- Identify some of the Vehicle Conversions and Adaptive Equipment necessary to access and drive a Modified Vehicle
- When is good time to start the training process?
- Can anyone drive a modified vehicle?
- Who purchases the Vehicle?
- Insurance Requirements
- What about the client’s personal mobility equipment they currently use?
- Who are the State of Arizona current vendors?
Physical activity is essential for individuals with disabilities, promoting health, inclusion, and overall well-being. It helps maintain physical function, reduces health risks, and supports mental and social well-being. Despite these benefits, many face barriers to participation, including accessibility and misconceptions about safety. Adaptive sports and recreation provide opportunities for independence, connection, and enjoyment. Addressing financial, environmental, and social challenges ensures that everyone, regardless of ability, can experience the benefits of an active lifestyle.
Learning Outcomes
- Identify 3 Risk Factors for people with disabilities
- Identify 3 Benefits of participation in adaptive outdoor recreation
- Identify 3 community adaptive outdoor recreation resources
Ethical practice within the field of assistive technology continues to evolve and tested due to continued advancement of the solutions and strategies. As practitioners we have the opportunity and obligation to use an ethical lens in our work as we provide assistive technology services. Ethical guidance can direct how we inform those that we work with on the pros, cons, and in-betweens around AT, the internet, and AI. This session will use decision making models, the CRC Code of Ethics, the RESNA standards, and Wisconsin’s Best Practice guides to discuss AT service delivery. An active dialogue and case examples will be a key component of this session.
Learning Outcomes
- Participants will be able to list three ethical best practices for assistive technology services.
- Participants will be able to list three ethical decision making models as they apply to AT, the internet, and AI.
- Participants will apply AT service provision criteria and how they are covered by the CRC Code of Ethics.
